This is a replica of a sock worn during the Civil War. It is made with 100% Sport Weight Wool. A copy of the Original pattern can be viewed on the Civil War Re-Enactment Socks page. These were first knitted in Chester County Pennsylvania by volunteers for the soldiers. As shown, the sock was made in a variety of colors with the red, white, and blue strips in the ribbing and 1" thick.

These were the "Official Socks" knitters were encouraged to make for Union soldiers during the Civil War. The pattern was published by the US Sanitary Comission in 1865. The Sanitary Commission was a civilian organization dedicated to providing support for Union forces during the war. All colors were acceptable.
